Community Supported Agriculture of Central New York

Central New York Farm Share Collective

Looking for a way to make a difference in your life?  What about your local community?  The New Environment Association, CSA of Central New York, and Grindstone Farm are working together with Kimberly Johnson to do just that.  Kimberly is a local food and nutrition advocate, educator and student interested in local food-sheds, and food deserts.  Through Grindstone Farm the “Collective” is pleased to announce new ways to increase local access to local produce and the benefits of the Central New York Agricultural bounty.

Want to learn more, come visit CSACNY Volunteers at the Boys and Girls Club of Syracuse 212 Van Buren Street this Saturday June 29th from 1:30 PM until 4:30 PM.

The project consists of CNY community organizations and members who commit to paying for a farm share subscription of weekly local produce they receive during the growing season. Some people pay more to help subsidize other farm shares for people who will pay what they can afford. We’ll eventually use a sliding scale payment for this and other methods to cover costs of affordable local food.

So, collectively we get a pool of money, to pay a pool of farmers, to grow a pool of local produce that we then distribute fairly.

We’re pairing communities (like the university communities and other urban communities) and farmers to try to make the pilot work. Right now, we are looking at starting small to help subsidize 10 low cost farm shares (that each feed 2-4 people) in the Southside neighborhood and we are working with the Dr. King School. We are aiming for 10 weeks during summer growing season of 2013. We hope to work out some of the kinks and with that basic foundation in place, we’ll grow in future years.

Eventually, we hope to expand and create an infrastructure to link communities and farmers in a way that will help increase availability of fresh, local produce in the Central New York Community using a cooperative model.

If you are interested in helping, consider a tax deductible donation to CSACNY in support of this great cause.  Donations can be made out by check to CSACNY.  Coming soon, Paypal!
