New season starting up

Planning group meeting tonight at 7:00 pm at the Friends Meeting House on Euclid Ave. Keep checking this site for more information as it becomes available.

Thanks for a great season!

CSA-CNY’s summer program for 2008 has come to a close. It always seems like the season goes by so quickly!  We want to extend our most heartfelt thank you to our farmers for their hard work and dedication.  A special thanks goes to Casey Maher and Matt Coombs, the growers at Grindstone Farm.  You guys did a great job and we’ll miss you next season!

CSA-CNY does not offer an off-season program, but you can receive Grindstone Farm produce throughout the rest of the year through the farm’s Healthy Box program.  This program is run through the farm’s website, which act essentially as an online farmer’s market.  Each week the farm creates a mixed box of fresh fruits and vegetables that you can have delivered right to your home.  Or, you can customize your own box.  The boxes include fruit and vegetables primarily from Grindstone Farm or other local organic farms when available.  During the non-growing season, the farm brings in produce from an organic distributor.

There is no time commitment for the Healthy Box program. You can receive a box once a week, every other week, once a month, etc.  You can start and stop the program as you wish as well.  Boxes are either delivered directly to your home for a $10 charge or to a group delivery site for $5.  Deliveries are every Thursday through November and every other Thursday after that.  The group sites are at the following locations:

  • Syracuse University neighborhood
  • Onondaga Valley
  • Nottingham Area (DeWitt)
  • East Syracuse
  • Manlius
  • Fayetteville
  • DeWitt
  • Liverpool
  • Baldwinsville
  • Central Square
  • Cicero
  • Marcellus / Skaneateles
  • Oswego
  • Cazenovia
  • Pulaski

Please contact Grindstone Farm directly to sign up for this program (see contact information on their website).

We will be posting information about the 2009 season in late winter, so stay tuned!

As you browse the pages of our website, you will find information about the farms that supply CSA-CNY, how to join, links to other food-related organizations and websites, CSA activities and more.   And remember, you are the community in community supported agriculture, so please drop us a line if you have any suggestions or comments about CSA-CNY or if you have questions about any of the information you find here.

As always, please continue to:

  • support local organic food
  • communicate with the Planning Group
  • visit the farms, touch the land, observe miracles, and celebrate sustainable life.

Provence Basil Soup

(from Katherine Hughes)

Here is a favorite recipe from a 1905 Provence cookbook. Apparently in Provence it’s only eaten for the 6 weeks that basil is in season. It’s eaten as the main meal with big hunks of French bread and butter – and wine, of course! The ingredients can be varied according to taste and what’s in season. Read the rest of this entry »
